Dwelling in The Truth

Written by Melanie on September 2nd, 2010

The verdict?  Guilty.  We are slaves to sin. We cannot free ourselves. We cannot save ourselves!   But God doesn’t want us to dwell in this truth for too long, because it only leads to despair.

It’s the truth about Jesus that matters.

Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God, came to dwell among us.  He lived a sinless life, suffered and died on The Cross to pay the penalty for our sins.  He rose to life, and is at the right hand of God.  Someday, He will come again.

Jesus can mean two very different things to us.

When we dwell in the truth of our sinfulness, He is a curse.  A standard to which we cannot measure up, that leaves us hopeless.  A reminder of how we have failed, that leaves us condemned.

But when we dwell in the truth about wonderful, beautiful Jesus, we are blessed.  He is a light that shines in our darkness and gives us hope.  He is a bridge spanning the gap between us and God, bringing us into that glorious Presence once again.

For Jesus, we face the truth about our sin.  In Jesus, this truth sets us free.

How Do You Plead?

Written by Melanie on August 12th, 2010

            Imagine this.

You are in a courtroom, in the defendant’s chair.  The prosecuting attorney seems familiar, but you just can’t place him.  Is it his sly self-assurance or his haunting presence that irks you?

There are other people in the courtroom too.  Witnesses, all for the prosecution you note.  Now you are scared.

            It gets worse.

One by one, as they step forward to testify against you, you discover that the witnesses are people that you know or have known somewhere along your life’s journey – those near and dear to you.

Hold your heart!  Your mother is there!!

One by one the witnesses testify to every selfish, thoughtless, and hurtful thing you have ever done to them.  Every broken promise as well as every lie you thought you would never get caught in.  Every careless word or action that you wish you could take back.  Every sin.

Now it is the prosecutor’s turn to speak.  You swallow hard.

“Behold, your accusers,” he sneers, waving a hand in the direction of the witnesses.  “Each has testified to your life of sin.  How do you plead?  Not guilty…or GUILTY?”

The biggest mistake you ever made, you now realize, was thinking that there would be some gray area to seek refuge in.  How can you deny the truth?  Again your accuser speaks.

“What is your plea?” he demands.

Before you a large wooden cross appears.  You know that Cross.  Jesus Christ hangs there.  Your eyes are fixed on the ground.  You dare not lift them.  Or do you?

Just as you feel the word forming on your lips, another more powerful Word finds its way into your heart.

Mercy.  Who spoke it?  You look to The Cross, to The Lord, and see it in His eyes.  You search your mind and recall it in His Word.  You search your soul and find it there, along with other words like Forgiveness, Grace, Love…Redemption…Salvation!

Your accuser points one steely finger at you and another at The Cross, and shouts:

“ARE YOU NOT COVERED WITH HIS BLOOD?”

“His blood covers me,” you reply.  “There is a difference!”

In 1 Peter 4:8, the apostle teaches us that “love covers over a multitude of sins.”  Jesus Christ is God’s expression of His unconditional love for us.  Christ died to make the difference for you!  He did not die to condemn you, but to save you!  He rose again and He lives to intercede for you!  Believe the Good News.

Priceless….

I nervously stepped up onto the chair and looked out at the sea of young men in the quad outside my dorm.  They looked back at me.  This “slave auction” was an annual charity event at my university.  All the young women participated.

The auctioneer shouted, “Let’s start the bidding at $5.00.  Who is going to bid $5.00?  No one?  Come on, men.  Surely somebody will bid $5.00!”  But all there was, was silence.  So the auctioneer lowered the bid.  Yet nobody spoke up.

Nobody bid on me.

That scenario is real and it happened in 1966 and it happened to me.  What did that do to my self- worth?  It destroyed it.  Oh, yes, I went on outwardly and with confidence, but inside I hurt.  I buried that hurt deep inside and moved forward with my life.

However, after discovering my husband’s infidelity after 30 years of marriage, that feeling of worthlessness resurfaced, and it resurfaced with a vengeance.

Fortunately, when this occurred I was working here at SHLC – God’s timing is perfect -  and I had the opportunity to travel to California for a workshop called Next Step.  I was sent by our church so I could improve my skills at working with our youth.  Little did I know the powerful effect it would have on me.

We were encouraged to share a hurt in our life during the course of the workshop, and I shared my “chair story”.  I barely held myself together as I recounted the event.  Later that day, one of the instructors came to me and whispered in my ear……. “Of course nobody bid on you…..you are priceless!”.   I burst into tears.

That  was it!  I am priceless.  I am child of God who sent His only Son to suffer and die for me.  There is no price tag on that!  He did it for me!!  He knows my worth!

Deep inside, I already know that.  I had heard it all my life.  So why didn’t I draw on that strength earlier?  I don’t know.  All I know is that God put me in that place at that time when I most needed to not only be reminded of that fact….but to truly acknowledge it and believe it!

He suffered and died for you as well!   You, too, are a child of God.  You, too, are priceless!  Never doubt it.  I pray that you will draw on that assurance each and every day, and I pray, that you will share it with others.
