What do we take for granted?

Monday, January 16th, 2012

I woke up the other day, and following my usual routine  I went to the kitchen to make a cup of tea before checking my email on the computer.  After I checked my email, I sat down to do my morning devotions.    I use  Portals of Prayer and usually also read from  another year long devotional book, and then I say my prayers.  When I got to my prayers,  it hit me!  My hip did not hurt at all.  I wasn’t limping as I had been doing for many days prior.  I had been praying daily for relief from the pain in my hip, and when I received an answer in the affirmative to that prayer, I did not even recognize it immediately.  I unconsciously  had taken it for granted that my hip worked without any pain.

The fact is that God is answering our prayers every day!  He is blessing us every day.  And more often than not, we do not recognize it, let alone acknowledge it.  We take so much for granted.

I took my good health for granted for 57 years and only truly appreciated it when I contracted a rare disease while on the Peru mission trip in 2004 , which resulted in many physical problems, not the least of which is difficulty swallowing.  Oh, my goodness, who ever thought of swallowing as a gift?  I do now because I struggle with it every day!  We take so much for granted.

Think of the miracle of our body!  Our heart beats, our eyes blink, our food digests, we can taste food, we can walk and talk, and those are the obvious things.  We take so much for granted!

What about the air we breathe?  The wonderful clean water we are fortunate enough to have to drink?  Our homes?  Clothing?  Jobs?  Friends?  Family?  Our church family? The freedoms we enjoy?  The list could go on forever.  Let’s face it.  We take so much for granted!

We are in the season of Epiphany…..the season where Jesus is revealed to the world as our Savior. The season we are called upon to share the Good News. We were so excited at Christmas by the birth of Jesus, but now that have we taken down the tree and packed away the decorations ….are we taking Him for granted?

Let us rejoice and give thanks for the gifts God has bestowed upon us….especially the gift of Jesus our Savior. Yes, He is always with us.   Let us not take Him for granted!

childlike faith

Recently my daughter shared on Facebook the following exchange that took place in the car between her 8 year old son and her 5 year old daughter.

Mea:  Are we all going to die?

Erik:  Not if you believe in Jesus because then you will live forever.

Mea:  (pumping her little fist in the air) YES!

It is really that simple, isn’t it? It is the message of the New Testament:  The Savior is here!

Yet, we adults make it so difficult.  We debate, argue, quarrel, and as a result separate Christ’s church into warring factions. Some predict that the church as we know it will be a thing of the past in this century.  How frightening that is to me!

Sometimes I think that the expression “The devil is in the details” is true when it comes to people arguing and nit-picking  over their various interpretations of the Bible.  The arguing separates us and the devil loves that.  The original expression was actually, “God is in the details.”  Perhaps if we kept that in mind as we study His Word, we would be more successful at spreading the Good News and growing Christ’s church.

Of course, we should study God’s Word!  This is critical to growing our faith and drawing us closer to our Lord.  But our relationship to God is a very personal one.  And each of us has to sort that out for ourselves.

“If you believe in Jesus you will live forever!”

How about a fist pump and a resounding, “YES!”

Express Pass

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Last Friday my family and I visited the Empire State Building in NYC, along with 19,996 other people.  (Yes, twenty thousand is the average daily turnout!)  Fortunately, my husband had checked things out online the day before and had splurged on Express Pass tickets.

When we arrived at the ESB, we showed our Express Passes to the guard at the door and were immediately whisked past the lines of people to the first elevator up.  Now that’s express!

If you’ve never been to the ESB, let me tell you, the lines to get to that first elevator are long!  They wind around and around, and they don’t appear to move at all.  Walking past them, I witnessed the progression from excitement to fatigue to impatience in people’s faces.

A security guard actually stopped people who were finally getting into the elevator, to let my family and I get in ahead of them.  This felt, well, wrong.

I distinctly remember wishing that I had worn nicer clothes and some jewelry.  It’s silly, I know, but then maybe I would at least have appeared more worthy of the V.I.P. treatment.  I tried to tell myself that my husband had paid my way for this, but it still didn’t feel right.  I hadn’t put in my time – hadn’t ‘paid’ – the way everyone else had.

We haven’t ‘put in our time’ as the children of God, have we?

Jesus did that for us.  He did for us what we could not – could never – do for ourselves:  He’s bought us Express Passes to The Kingdom of God!

He paid for them with His life.

There are no other ‘tickets’ available, no line long enough.

Are we worthy?  No!  Good Friday reminds us of that.  Yet at the same time, God wants us to receive His Good Gift just as we are.

God wants us to come to Him, just as we are!

This is the message of Easter:  that Jesus Christ died on The Cross to pay the price for our sins.  He whisks us past sin and death, into the everlasting arms of God!

He is Risen!   He Lives!  And because of this, we have the promise of eternal life in and with Him!!

            Hallelujah!!
