Keeping fit
[More...] You have seen them, I am sure. You know - all of those ads for exercise equipment and gyms and fitness programs. And everyone in those ads does indeed look very fit. There is just one problem. Looking at the equipment and the ads doesn’t make you more fit! You have to get involved and take action, and yes, it takes hard work, time and commitment! If you know me, you know that I do work on being physically fit. I try to get to my daughter’s gym at least twice a week, preferably three times. I was faithful for almost two years, and then in May I injured myself lifting a 50-pound bag of potting soil. And just as I was recovering from that, I injured my arm pushing my stepmother in her wheelchair. So, I haven’t been to the gym in two months but, of course, I had a good excuse. Never mind that if I had used my head in both cases, I would not have injured myself! Instead I have been in physical therapy. Now, as I face returning to the gym, it is daunting! I have lost ground and have to relearn and rebuild. That is how it is with my faith sometimes, too. I am guessing that it is like that for you, also. For a while, we are committed to our spiritual exercises. We read our Bibles faithfully, we attend worship, we pray, we tithe, we serve in a variety of capacities and exercise our spiritual muscles. But then, for one reason or another, we slip away. Our faith may even seem weaker. We only have ourselves to blame for this. And then, the challenge is to get back in the game! Sometimes that is very difficult. We would rather sleep in on Sunday morning, or go to a ball game. We want to go on vacation or buy a new car, or buy a vacation home, so our tithing drops off. We don’t seem to find time for prayer because there are more pressing matters. We have other pressing commitments to school, work, kids activities, and so forth. We all have “good excuses”. We give God a passing thought now and then, but thinking about our faith is not enough. We have to act it. “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” James 2:17Well, guess what! It is never to late to “get back in the spiritual fitness game”. But get back in the game we must for Jesus tells us we are to “make every effort to enter through the narrow door because many, I tell you, will try to enter and not be able to.” (Luke 13: 24) We are to stay connected to Him and with Him.If we don’t exercise regularly, we are not going to stay physically fit. And certainly we do have a responsibility to be good stewards of our bodies. But more importantly, we are to exercise our spiritual selves and stay strong in the faith. Our life in eternity is depending on it!
