Love is in the air

Valentine's Day is coming - and it is all about love! But what is love really? There is more than one kind of love!  There is the Valentine's day kind of love, eros, which is romantic love.  Then, of course, there is brotherly love, philia.  But the really hard kind of love? Well, that is agape!  It is more than giving of flowers and candy and cards. That Love,  agape or Christ-like love, requires work and time and patience and forgiveness and sacrifice and sometimes suffering.  Jesus endured the cross for us.    Christ-like love is unconditional! What does God expect of us in terms of love?  First, He wants us to love others.  He commanded us to  "love your neighbor as you love yourself" (Mark 12:31)'. That is; care for them and about them, recognize their existence and their pain and their joys.  There are so many people all around us who are in need of love without judgment or conditions.  The person next to you in the pew on Sunday probably could use some of your love, whether to share in their hurt or to celebrate their joy.  We all need to be loved, and I imagine God also wants us to verbalize our love.Recently  my daughter challenged people on her website to actually tell someone dear to them that they love them.  Here are some of the responses which I personally found very surprising!"If I told either of my parents, my sisters, or my brother I loved them, they'd think something was seriously wrong.""I told my mom and she said I know you do, why are you telling me this. lol, I should probably call back just to make sure she was able to get up off the ground ok...""I texted my sister and told her, though I also had to explain I wasn't dying or anything."But thankfully others responded as follows:"Gosh..this was an easy one.  Saying I love you in our family is very natural and a daily event.  So blessed!""Wow, this was a very easy one for us. We say this every day and multiple times each day.""I'm always paranoid that I will wake up and have missed the chance to let my friends/family know that I love them.  So I always say it."Please don't miss the opportunity to  share your love with others!  God commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves.  By sharing your love with others, you are sharing His love as well.  This Valentines Day...no..every day, why not reach out to someone who is in need of some unconditional love!  Christ-like love.  Agape love!
