Sufficiently grateful

A friend of mine recently found out, after many tests, that she was cancer-free.  She had prayed fervently for this good news.   Of course, she was relieved!   But she confessed to me that she felt guilty because she did not feel sufficiently grateful to God for this news.As I thought about her comments, I began to wonder if any of us can actually be  sufficiently grateful.  After watching the Passion of the Christ several weeks ago, I realize that it is impossible for us to be!  The gruesome suffering and death our Lord endured cannot even be grasped.  While in Israel in February, our group saw the horrific instruments of torture used in scourging and heard about the horrors of crucifixion.  I so glibly recite weekly the apostle’s creed “suffered under Pontius Pilate died and was buried” .  Even when I meditate on those words, I cannot fully comprehend God sending His only begotten Son to suffer and die for me.No, I know I can never be sufficiently grateful for the sacrifice and suffering our Lord endured.  I cannot ever be sufficiently grateful for his countless gifts to me, especially for his grace.  But I know I can ask for his forgiveness for my selfish nature and am assured that I will receive it.  .  How great is our God!
